Brain Terrain is a 501c3 non profit dedicated to providing support for those suffering from a brain injury through raising awareness with education, providing resources and creating community to brain injury survivors, including concussions and post-concussion syndrome.
Brain Terrain looks to destigmatize the injury and its effects, shed light on both the physical and psychological effects of brain injuries, raise awareness for the importance of mitigative factors, and a team approach to identifying the signs and symptoms in somebody, as well as provide hope for those who are currently suffering from a brain injury.
Started 11/5/2022, Brain Terrain Inc, was founded by Maddie Jo Robbins after she sustained a concussion at the 2019 Mountain Bike World Championships. That day and that injury changed her life forever. She saw first hand the pain of a concussion, the lack of knowledge around the injury in both the medical and general populations and felt an intense need to begin chipping away at what she sees as a silent epidemic. In association with Stilspoke and Stio, Brain Terrain has created a documentary that follows Maddie Jo’s concussion journey to pull back the veil on what life with a concussion is really like in order to spread awareness and begin educating the world.
My name is Maddie Jo Robbins. Had you met me five years ago I would have told you I was an elite mountain bike racer for the US National Team. You might have learned about my accomplishments on the national and international circuits, or my goal to compete in the Olympics. But, today I have a whole different story. Today, I will introduce myself as a brain injury survivor, an advocate for awareness, and a messenger of hope. Today, I am more than a bike racer. Today, I am the founder of a non-profit focused on supporting brain injury survivors through information, an annual group triathlon, and a heartfelt film.
After sustaining a traumatic brain injury in the 2019 Mountain Bike World Championships and arriving home to find very little in the way of knowledge and guidance on the recovery aspects of the injury, I took to raising awareness for this world-wide silent epidemic of an injury. I started a triathlon and created a film to raise awareness and to demonstrate to others suffering from this injury that their experiences are valid and they are not alone on this journey. I am passionate about finding a way through this injury not just for myself but everyone.
In addition to my work with Brain Terrain, I am currently attending Colorado College and pursuing a degree in Neuroscience where I hope to be able to take my life experience and the ever-evolving medical field to create a concussion clinic that helps those who are facing the hell of a concussion or brain injury.
I also spend time coaching with my local youth biking club, have an EMT certificate where I’ve worked as a ski patroller and EMT for my local college EMS team. I love being in the outdoors, travelling, adventuring, biking and being with my Durango community.
Date for 2025 Tri the Brain coming soon.
