The documentary follows Maddie Jo’s journey to recovery after a brain injury sustained in the 2019 Mountain Bike World Championships altered her life forever. It will visit the people and the places that pulled her through the slog, and lifted her over the mountains. It will touch on heavy topics ranging from depression and anxiety caused by brain injuries, to uplifting stories of finding treatments, being supported by an incredible community, and accomplishing an off-road triathlon with a group of peers and other TBI survivors. The film aims to raise awareness for brain injuries, including concussions and post-concussion syndrome, destigmatize the injury and its effects, shed light on both the physical and psychological effects of brain injuries, raise awareness for the importance of mitigative factors, and a team approach to identifying the signs and symptoms in somebody, as well as provide hope for those who are currently suffering from a brain injury.
The film will venture through communities and schools to raise awareness and begin the conversation around concussions with the hope of educating youth and adults alike on the need to take this injury seriously. Maddie Jo did not have education on concussions, she did not know the detrimental impact continuing to race could have. She had to learn that lesson the hard way. With this film she hopes to take her learnings and share them with the world to help mitigate the amount of athletes ending up in similar situations.
